From Carnegie to Tofino
How Carnegie Hall led me to Tofino
Carnegie Hall will always be special to me. It just so happens that I have lived there many key moments of my life. It is where I first performed in the Big Apple, when I arrived at 19 years old. I still recall how, on Christmas day, I stood there pinching myself because of the dizziness and excitement I was experiencing. Through the next decade, I did make several other appearances on the legendary stage. I find it rather heart warming that Carnegie is also the last venue I performed at in the U.S.A. That night, I was lucky enough to be the lead cellist. Of course, another meaningful appearance is undoubtedly for my Juilliard School Masters Degree’s graduation performance. It really looks as if Carnegie Hall has been celebrating major turnarounds of my life with me.
Moving on from the Big Apple
Back in Canada, I was on the lookout for a great country location to move to. I knew that my musical opportunities could be seriously reduced but I was willing to take the jump. My ambitions had suddenly changed and I wanted a high quality of life at all cost.
It took me a whole year to find the jewel I was looking for – Tofino – one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
Little did I know, Tofino would allow me to achieve a balanced life, while remaining active as a classical cellist. I have to admit that a classical cellist in Tofino is a rare find! So, in this way, I started playing weddings in venues such as: the Black Rock Resort on Big Beach, the Long Beach Lodge Resort and many more. It did not take long before I became a regular performer at the Wickaninnish Inn’s Driftwood Cafe. Similarly, I was also hired to perform at the Maquinna Hotel for its weekly wine tasting events.
Playing for my new community was more fun than playing in prestigious halls.
One of the biggest benediction in my life is to be in close contact with nature’s beauty while taking part in outdoor musical celebrations. I am grateful to the Tofino Botanical Garden and its Tofino Winterlights Festival for inviting to perform in one of the most gratifying venues of Tofino.
I am very grateful to be an active performer in the Tofino and Ucluelet community.
It is an honor to be part of the magic here and to inspire people to listen to and follow their heart!
